Late Friday afternoon, Will looked at me and said, “Hey, how about we do some poppers tonight.”

As I clapped my hands in glee, I said, “Wow. Our Friday night just took an interesting turn! Hey, do you think we’ll be okay, I mean your blood pressure and all. Never mind, I’m sure we’ll be okay. Let’s do this! Where did you find them?”

Will just stared at me.

He finally said, “I’m going to make jalapeno poppers. What did you think I meant?”

With my memories of evenings spent at the Bourbon Pub holding on to a barstool, snorting poppers quickly replaced by the thought of bacon-wrapped, cheese-stuffed yumminess, I clapped my hands with glee again.

Because, jalapeno poppers. There’s a lot to get excited about. Particularly Will’s, because he uses home-made pimento cheese. Read it, make it, eat it, love them.

Face it, your youth is gone. Chemical poppers are a thing of the past. But jalapeno poppers…they might just be better.
